Short biography
Amer Matar is an investigative journalist, documentary filmmaker and founder of the Prisons Museum. Based in Berlin, he works on the history of prisons, repression and disappearance in Syria and Iraq through documents, testimony and spatial documentation. His work takes the form of investigations, films and exhibitions.
Extended biography
Amer Matar is a Syrian investigative journalist and documentary filmmaker based in Berlin. He founded the Prisons Museum, whose collaborative work connects detention sites, archives, survivor testimony and spatial reconstruction. Its projects include the ISIS Prisons Museum, the Syria Prisons Museum and Jawab.
His earlier work includes AlShare, founded in 2010, and the Syria Mobile Film Festival, prepared from 2013. He studied journalism at Damascus University and worked in reporting, film and cultural production. In 2021, he testified at the Koblenz trial of former Syrian intelligence officer Anwar Raslan. After the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024, he returned to Syria and worked with the Prisons Museum team to document former detention sites. His work is developed collectively with journalists, researchers, architects, archivists, filmmakers and survivors.
